After School Programs

We offer a multitude of educational services and academic enrichment opportunities to students such as:

  • Educational Tutoring/Mentoring and SAT Prep: We provide students with direct help in all academic areas.  We have a dedicated and capable staff consisting of college students and teachers offering tutoring in the areas of Science, Math, History, English, Reading and Writing.  We also offer ESL classes given that for 33% of families in the Charles area, English is not their first or primary language.  We have an SAT Prep class offered to high school students once a week.  In addition we have a mentoring program in which we pair children and youth with volunteer mentors from around the state.  The mentors and their child or youth meet anywhere from 1-4 times per week and partake in recreational activities as well as the mentors offering academic help if needed.

  • Reading Club: The purpose of this program is to increase participants reading and comprehension skills in English.  The participants will develop interests in books as well as write reports thus engaging them to think critically, spell accurately, and read with a better sense of comprehension.  Other activities that will be developed through the reading club are:

  • Readers and Writers: This activity will expose participants to various aspects of the book world.  Activities will range from reading by children, authors, and community residents; trips to the library, book festivals, publishers and printing plans.  Participants will also be offered with the opportunity to write a journal.

  • Newsletter Workshop: This program will help increase participants written communication, graphic skills, and introduce them to desktop publishing.

  • Pen-Pal Program Club: The pen-pal program allows students from grades 3rd, 4th, and 5th, to establish a pen-pal relationship with their peers in other local schools. Once a week they will communicate with other peers via the computer.

  • Kids/Youth and Computers: This program will introduce participants to the computer theory, word processing and other computer programs. This activity will meet the participant’s need for computer literacy, and provide youths with opportunities to participate in activities that promote employability. They will develop their ability and their self-esteem.  They will develop the ability to think critically, spell accurately and read with comprehension.
